Eagle Studio was established in 1915 by Louder H. Matossian, an Armenian immigrant. For Matossian, the American Eagle symbolized strength and integrity. He chose to name his newly established portrait business Eagle Studio. He was proud of his heritage and proud to be an American. Over the years his studio prospered and he added cameras and supplies. In the late 30's, his daughter, Fimie, assisted her father in developing and printing customer proofs and B&W films. During WWII, Clyde Williamson, a sailor stationed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, wanted to send his Mom a picture of himself. After several unsuccessfull attempts with a Mercury Uvex camera, he threw it off the Memorial Bridge into the river. At that point he decided to walk over to Eagle Studio. There he met Fimie, not only did he find a camera, but they were married 2 years later. At the end of WWII, The Williamson's moved to Clyde's hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. There he resumed his trade and opened his own dental lab. Fimie was employed by The Eastman Kodak Co. as a camera salesperson in their retail store in Atlanta. This was quite an accomplishment for a woman (and a Yankee) in a male dominated sales position. It didn't take long for Fimie to gain the respect from her fellow co-workers. By 1956 Louder Matossian retired for health reasons. The Williamson's moved back to Portsmouth. Son-in-law, Clyde and Artin Matossian, Louder's son, took over the family business. The pair moved the store to a new, larger location on Congress Street. With respect to Louder's vision, the business name changed to Eagle Photo Supply, Inc. The business now focused on photographic equipment and supplies. In 1962, Clyde became sole owner and president of Eagle Photo. Clyde expanded the business to selling equipment and supplies wholesale throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont as well as maintaining the retail store. He also acheived the status of having the largest B&W processing facility north of Boston. The lab processed in excess of 200 rolls of film per day. In the 70's color became more poular and things changed again. In 1980, Clyde's daughter, Cindy joined the family business. A few years later Clyde installed the first color min-lab in the Seacoast area. Cindy managed the processing lab while Clyde maintained daily operations. Photography was changing and customers wanted everything now. So the color lab expanded to doing color enlargents, E-6 slide processing and B&W processing ALL in one hour. Clyde retired in 1995, but not really, he still comes in most every day to make sure the store is open on time. By now the digital bug is coming and the shape of photography changes again. Cindy installed state-of-the-art computers and scanners for digital restorations and photo manipulation, as well as adding digital cameras and supplies. In 2004, Eagle Photo Supply moved again to Plaza 800 Islington Street. The new location offers a more open sales showroom and photo lab. Two more digital kiosks were added to offer customers hands-on digital printing, from the lab or instantly. An oversized printer was installed to print photos up to 44 inches by 100 feet. Today, Eagle Photo Supply celebrates it's 90th year in business. Over the past 13 years, Eagle Photo Supply has been voted #1, by local survey, for Best Camera Store & Film Processing in the Seacoast. An achievement Louder Matossian can be proud to have started. | ||
